At least 20 bets for barangay chairman in Ilagan City in Isabela province will be running unopposed in the upcoming barangay elections, after their opponents withdrew from the race.
The Commission on Elections in Region 2 disclosed this after it ended the extension of candidacy filing last weekend.
Comelec assistant regional director and Ilagan City acting election officer Atty. Jerbee Anthony Cortez said 2,900 have filed their certificates of candidacy for barangay chairman or councilor in the region (http://northboundasia.com/2018/04/26/20-village-heads-unopposed-20-withdraw-bid-in-barangay-polls/).
At least 1,232 also filed their certificates of candidacy for Sangguniang Kabataan heads or council members.
One of the barangay chairman bets running unopposed is last-minute filer Ernel Absuela, 39.
Absuela said their barangay chairman, Joseph Uy, did not seek reelection in Barangay Sta. Isabel Sur in Ilagan City.
“He should be running for his last term but he decided to be back in private service and endorsed me,” Absuela said.
For his part, Isabela provincial election supervisor Manuel Castillo said some candidates filed their certificates of candidacy at the last minute.
