Crew members of a Taiwanese Coast Guard vessel rescued two Filipinos off Batanes over the weekend.
Taiwanese news sites said the rescue occurred in an overlapping area of the exclusive economic zones of Taiwan and the Philippines.
A spokesperson of Liuqiu Fishermen Association said a local fishing boat’s captain, surnamed Chen, alerted the Coast Guard Administration at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Initial reports showed the two Filipinos were seen drifting and needing assistance at 88 nautical miles (163 km) off Batanes (http://focustaiwan.tw/news/asoc/201806170014.aspx).
The Coast Guard sent its vessel CG-133 to the area. By 2 p.m., the crew picked up the Filipinos and handed them over to authorities in Basco, Batanes.
Chen said the two Filipinos were washed into sea earlier that day.
