The Supreme Court (SC) has acquitted former Buguey mayor Ignacio Taruc of graft charges.
The SC order reversed a Sandiganbayan ruling that sentenced the Cagayan politiko of up to 10 years in prison.
Taruc was accused of withholding the salaries of five municipal workers in 2007.
The High Court said the prosecution failed to prove Taruc was guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
According to the SC, the prosecution “failed to prove the elements of manifest partiality, evident bad faith, and undue injury beyond reasonable doubt.”
