PNP Ilocos Norte to investigate NPA threats vs barangay officials

The Ilocos Norte provincial government vowed to launch a probe on alleged threats by the New People’s Army against village officials of Bangui town.

According to Ilocos Norte police provincial director Julius Suriben, they will also be ready to deploy additional security details to the local Politikos being threatened.

“We can order the augmentation or improvement of their security if needed,” he said, adding that each official is allowed up to two security personnel.

Earlier, Bangui Mayor Fidel Cimatu urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) for assistance, without disclosing the identities of the village officials who received the threats.

“The callers [identified] themselves as NPA and they are asking for rice supply. We don’t know if these are just forms of extortion or related to the upcoming barangay elections,” Mayor Cimatu said.
