Benguet Board Member Nestor Fongwan Jr is vehemently opposing the proposed prolonged closure of Kennon Road for rehabilitation.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong earlier suggested that Kennon Road be closed for five years.
He explained that it’s better for the unstable areas of Kennon Road to settle naturally.
“I would rather condition the mind of Baguio and Benguet people to not using Kennon Road for the next five years. Pabagsakin muna nang pabagsakin ‘yung mga unstable na area and after that, let us rehabilitate it,” Magalong said.
But Fongwan said that thousands of people living in communities along Kennon Road will be negatively affected by the prolonged closure.
He urged government officials to look for a win-win solution.
“Now that Kennon road is temporarily closed to vehicular traffic, motorists taking the alternate routes going in and out of Baguio City and residents living in the communities along the alternate routes are suffering from the consequences of tremendous traffic, pollution among others which they did not experience when Kennon rod was still open to light vehicles,” Fongwan said.
