The Bolinao municipal council has declared the coastal town as the Giant Clam Capital of the Philippines.
Bolinao Councilors Carolina Abad and Joven Caasi, in a resolution, said since the establishment of giant clam research programs and a giant clam nursery in 1985, the municipality and the University of the Philippine Marine Science Institute (UPMSI) has led the country in giant clam conservation.
The resolution is now awaiting approval from the Pangasinan provincial board and the Department of Tourism.
There are currently six species of giant clams in the hatchery and nursery.
