Santa Cruz Mayor Virgilio Valle, in a Rappler report, said there is nothing else the municipal government can do to improve the implementation of the smoking ban.
The Ilocos Sur politiko is referring to President Rodrigo Duterte’s Exeuctive Order (EO) 26 or the nationwide smoking ban and Santa Cruz’s own ordinance banning smoking.
Valle said he himself reminds his constituents about the hazards of smoking.
“I used to be a smoker. Then I stopped. I was able to convince others to do the same. I tell them, ‘Stop smoking. You will kill us all,’” he said.
“When I go to the barangay – let say, for example, I would deliver water hose, water pumps, or I’ll be invited to a barangay activity – then I touch on a lot of things, one of which is smoking,” Valle added.
But he admitted there’s only so much the municipal government can do.
“I don’t see any other way of doing it better than what we are doing because, as I’ve said, smoking is a personal choice. But of course it helps a lot, I believe, for people to hear about the bad effects of smoking,” Valle said.
