Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan urged the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) to give small-scale miners more leeway in securing permits.
This after a gold processing mill facility disposed its waste at the Ambalanga River.
The waste disposal caused water discoloration at the Ambalanga River.
“I begged to [EMB Regional Director Reynaldo Digamo] that they should give us more time for us to comply with the requirements of the EMB,” Palangdan said.
The Benguet politiko said small-scale mining is the only livelihood of the miners.
“From the very beginning, they are illegal and they should stop but they are being allowed because the government understands their predicament that it is their only source of living,” Palangdan added.
