Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the cutting of 53 pine trees at Outlook Driver by developer Vista Residences caught the city government by surprise.
Vista Residences is under Vista Land.
Former Senate president Manny Villar is Vista Land’s chairman of the board.
Vista Residences was granted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) with a special private land timber permit amid the coronavirus disease (COVID19) pandemic.
“We are saddened because we feel it is a big blow to our Re-greening Master Plan amid our request to the Office of the President for a tree-cutting moratorium,” Magalong said.
“While the proposed moratorium has been taken over by this health crisis, we need to follow this up to ensure that our remaining trees will be preserved,” he added.
