Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan has admitted that the Cordillera region cannot become an independent federal state because the region’s tax collection is not enough to sustain it.
The Baguio politiko said that the practical option would be the realization of the Cordillera autonomy.
Domogan said that based on the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s (BIR) actually collection of taxes, the 80% share of the Cordillera will not sustain the federal state’s operation.
This is aside from the share that will be contributed to the national government.
The BIR collected P5.2 billion in taxes in the Cordillera but 80% of the taxes was collected in Baguio City.
Domogan also said that if the Cordillera region achieves autonomy before the national government’s shift to federalism, it will have a better chance to be intact.
