President Rodrigo Duterte believes that Ilocanos are the only true warriors among Filipino tribes.
Duterte – a fan of the most famous Ilocano, the late President Ferdinand Marcos – has long been vocal about his respect for the bravery and discipline of Ilocanos in combat and has filled his Cabinet with former generals of Ilocano stock.
“Food for thought lang, tayong mga lalaki alam mo ang warrior lang dito sa ating bayan and to their credit which I must — ang warrior tribes natin, karamihan ng ating sundalo pati mga generals, the Ilocanos,” said Duterte in a speech in Albay.
” ‘Yun ang ating mga sundalo. Kaya mahal ko ‘yan sila kasi they form the bulk of the — our soldiers. Marami ‘yan sila, puro Ilocano ‘yan. Ang Cabinet ko ngayon, ‘yan sila. Almost same number ng sibilyan,” he added.
Duterte praised his Ilocano Cabinet men, Environment Secretary Roy Cimato and Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, for fulfilling his command to clean up Boracay Island in six months.
“Lahat ‘yan puro general. Alam mo kung bakit? I do not have anything.
I have no misgivings about anybody in the bureaucracy. The problem is pagka ‘yang bureaucracy na ‘yan may iutos ka, debatehin ka pa. ‘Alam mo sir, hindi…’ And it will take them forever,” said Duterte “In six months time, ayun malinis na (Boracay). Ibigay mo sa sibilyan? Hesusmaryosep. ‘Sir, hindi pa tapos sir. Kay nakulang ‘yung mga kemika…’ Ganun ‘yan eh,” he added.
