The Department of Health alarmed the local government units within Region 2 about a potential outbreak of the COVID-19 variant first detected in the United Kingdom as cases continue to rise in Tuguegarao City.

“This might explain why cases are increasing in Tuguegarao,” DOH Spokesperson and Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an online press conference. The agency added that 9 turned out to be carriers of the B.1.1.7 variant—first found in the United Kingdom—in the region.

As of May 16, the Cagayan region has reported 2,835 active cases, with the majority coming from Cagayan and Isabela.
