Alcala Mayor Tin Antonio is on a mission to make her municipality rival the sakura trees found in Japan.
On Friday, February 19, the politiko said the local government is planning to plant around 4,000 salinggogon or pink mempat trees along the Maharlika National Highway starting July.
Once the project pushes through, the highway would one day be lined with trees bearing beautiful pink flowers.
“Salinggogon or pink mempat is a medium-sized tree native to our country. We will observe DPWH’s easement, of course. Let’s do this for our Green Wall of Alcala — our shield of trees as literal protection and natural levee against massive flood,” Antonio said.
“I hope we can work together to make this happen. Let’s plant the seedlings and make sure they survive to become our mighty wall of native trees. Sapay kuma ta naragsak tayo a pagtitinnulungan daytoy. Game?” she added.
