Senator Imee Marcos urged President Rodrigo Duterte’s government to soon give the higher funds promised to local government units (LGUs) under the Mandanas ruling.
The North Luzon politiko made the appeal in a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 12. She said LGUs are now in dire need of more funds due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Ang mga LGUs ang ating frontliners at kagyat nilang kailangan na makamit ang matagal nang naipagkait na pagpondo ayon sa Mandanas-Garcia ruling na ipinatupad sa kasalukuyang national budget,” said Marcos.
In 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that LGUs’ Internal Revenue Allotment should be sourced from all national taxes, not just those collected by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. The petitioner of this case was former Batangas governor Hermilando Mandanas.
In effect, this means higher funds for LGUs, which is set to be implemented in 2022.
