Nueva Vizcaya Governor Carlos Padilla has expressed support to calls from civil society groups to put a stop to mining in the province.
The Nueva Vizcaya politiko’s statement comes as the extension of the Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) of mining firm Oceana Gold is set to expire this June.
Padilla said making Nueva Vizcaya mining-free will help conserve the province’s water resources.
“If mining gets stopped, there’s an assurance that the hole stays as it is and won’t escalate,” he said.
“Stop discussing what will happen but focus first on how to stop mining. Once the mining gets to an end, then it is the time to debate on the actions to be taken,” Padilla added.
