Benguet Governor Melchor Diclas said the temporary ban on the entry of live pigs and pork products is meant protect the swine industry from the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus.
The Benguet politiko said the temporary ban will protect the livelihood of around 16,000 hog raisers in the province.
Surrounding towns from other provinces have been affected by ASF.
“For our hog raisers, the provincial government is concerned about you that is why we are conducting meetings regarding the prevention of the virus from coming in here. Once the virus gets in, it will totally affect the live pigs here,” Diclas said.
“The province of Benguet remains free from African swine fever and thus, all measures to prevent the disease’s entry into Benguet must be instituted through the combined efforts of the provincial, municipal and barangay local government units and the Philippine National Police,” he added.
