President Rodrigo Duterte is “obviously” a dictator based on the dictionary definition of the word, according to House Majority Leader Rudy Fariñas.
He listed down four definitions of “dictator” in the dictionary:
1. a person exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.
2. (in ancient Rome) a person invested with supreme authority during a crisis, the regular magistracy being subordinated to him until the crisis was met.
3. a person who authoritatively prescribes conduct, usage, etc.: a dictator of fashion.
4. a person who dictates, as to a secretary.
“Obviously, he is one as to definition numbers 3 and 4; but not number 1 as he is NOT ‘exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession’,” Fariñas said.
“Neither does he fall under definition number 2,” he added.
“Yes, he is a President who ‘authoritatively prescribes conduct, usage, etc.,’ such as any high official who serves at his pleasure and is dragged even in a whiff of corruption or unnecessarily travels abroad gets fired!” Fariñas said.
“He also wants them traveling on economy class,” he said.
News reports quoted Duterte as saying, in Cebuano, “If you say dictator, I am really a dictator. Because if I don’t act like a dictator, son of a bitch, nothing will happen to this nation. That’s true.”
“If I don’t act like a dictator—my style now—nothing will happen to this country,” he was quoted as saying.
