Dagdag sa lista: DILG to declare LU an election hotspot area

Oct 5, 2018 @ 11:32

La Union may be included in the list of election hotspots in 2019, following the ambush on Sudipen town mayor Alexander Buquing last Monday.

Department of Interior and Local Government OIC Secretary Eduardo Año made the recommendation and is waiting for the response of the Commission on Elections.

Año said he is also waiting for the assessment of the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines (http://northboundasia.com/2018/10/04/dilg-eyes-la-union-as-poll-hotspot-after-attack-on-mayor/).

Last Monday, armed men gunned down Buquing in an ambush. Police are now providing security to Buquing’s wife, Sudipen Vice Mayor Wendy Joy Buquing, the lone survivor in the ambush.

Buquing is the 11th slain local chief executive under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Yet, Año noted many of recent killings of local officials had been due to “politics and personal motive.”
