The municipal government of Burgos in Ilocos Norte has declared a “plastic-free holiday” in all residential, commercial, agricultural, and institutional establishments every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Burgos local government has approved Municipal Ordinance 2021-002, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Code of Burgos that bans the use of single-use plastic products three times a week to lessen the production of plastic waste in the town.
“In case the violator is a business or commercial establishment, this shall result in suspension or cancellation of business permit,” the municipality said in a public advisory posted on its official Facebook page.
Municipal environment and natural resources officer Jay-Arr Tiguiamo said on Friday, March 17, that the plastic-free holiday ordinance is only their initial step to a plastic-free environment.
“For now, we have intensified our information and education campaign (on the ban on single-use plastic), particularly among business establishments and the locals,” he said.
