Another Ilocano politiko is being considered for the juicy Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary’s post after President Rodrigo Duterte went cold on his original choice, former senator Bongbong Marcos.
Enter Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas, the current House Majority Floor Leader.
According to a source, Fariñas–himself a former Ilocos Norte governor–is being eyed as a worthy DILG secretary thanks to his reputation as an astute politiko who means business.
As the right hand man of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Fariñas has successfully herded a diverse Supermajority bloc into toeing the line with the Duterte administration’s policies.
This includes comfortably passing the very contentious death penalty revival bill last March.
Incidentally, Fariñas is the only other political name of note in Ilocandia, aside from Marcos. Fariñas is now with Duterte’s PDP-Laban, but has always been a respected member of the House of Representatives (HOR) no matter what political party he belonged to.
Bongbong lost in the 2016 vice presidential race and was previously said to have the inside track on the DILG seat.
