Baguio activist convicted of cyberlibel, fined P250K

A Baguio activist convicted of cyber libel was ordered to pay P250,000 over comments on the dismantling of a monument dedicated to Cordillera martyr Macli-ing Dulag and two others.

Sarah Dekdeken, secretary general of Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), failed to secure a writ of amparo against red-tagging after the Court of Appeals denied her claim. She was sued last year for linking the police to the removal of the anti-Chico Dam heroes monument at Barangay Bugnay in Tinglayan, Kalinga.

She was ordered to pay the fine of P250,000, along with a P10,000 moral damages to retired Police Brig. Gen. R’win Pagkalinawan, who filed the case while he served as Cordillera police director.

The decision was issued by Judge Ivan Kim Morales of the Baguio Regional Trial Court Branch 59. Atty. Francisca Macli-ing Claver, Dekdeken’s lawyer, said their camp is filing a motion for reconsideration.
