80-year-old returning Batanes resident dies of COVID-19

An elderly returning resident of Batanes died of COVID-19 hours after arriving to the island province.

According to the Department of Health, the 80-year-old patient arrived at around 8 a.m. at Basco. Provincial health officer Dr. Allan Sande said that he was assigned to a quarantine facility in the capital for isolation. However, the man was taken to Batanes General Hospital on Saturday afternoon after experiencing difficulty in breathing and had tested positive for COVID-19 based on a rapid antigen test. He died at 12:44 a.m. on Sunday, Sande said.

“He was buried immediately in accordance with the protocols in managing deaths during the pandemic,” Sande noted in an interview. He was the sixth COVID-19 fatality in the province.

Around 90 passengers who were with him on his flight were also placed on quarantine.
