Local rice farmers in Laoag City received P5,000 each as cash aid from the government amid a looming food crisis.

The Department if Agriculture distributed the funding to a total of 2,218 rice farmers as part of its continuing effort to help eligible farmer-beneficiaries under the Rice Farmers Financial Assistance Program under Republic Act 11203 or the Rice Tariffication Law.

In his speech, Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Manotoc encouraged farmers to shift to other high-value crops to boost their productivity as the price of palay is no longer stable due to trade liberalization.

Under RA 11203, rice import tariffs in excess of the P10 billion earmarked annually for the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) could be used to provide financial assistance to palay growers, among other possible options.
