Ombudsman investigator suspended for extortion attempt on Gov Espino, son

After being arrested for trying to extort millions of pesos from Pangasinan Representative Amado Espino Jr. and his son, Bugallon town Mayor Jumell Anthony Espino, a graft investigator of the Office of the Ombudsman has been suspended suspended from service.

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales has issued a six-month preventive suspension order against Associate Graft Investigator Officer III (AGIO III) Leonardo Nicolas.

“The Ombudsman does not condone any form of corruption among its ranks,”Morales said in a statement.

“We will not let up in the campaign to remove undesirables in government service,” Morales also assured.

Morales said Nicolas and his cousin, labor arbiter Isagani Nicolas, were arrested during an entrapment operation conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) last July 21 in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

The suspects had been trying to extort as much as P3 million from the Espinos in exchange for dropping complaints pending against the before the Ombudsman.
