Mendoza to CA: Ilocos 6 detention is torture

Jun 26, 2017 @ 20:05

The Ilocos 6 is asking the Court of Appeals to declare their detention illegal and a form of torture.

Estelito Mendoza, the Ilocos 6’s lawyer, on Friday (June 23) filed a motion asking the CA Special 4th Division to resolve their pending habeas corpus case.

He also asked the appelate court to consider their detention illegal and torturous.

“The detainees are undergoing torture, which is barred by international conventions and barred explicitly under our laws as well,” Mendoza said.

The Ilocos 6 were cited in contempt and detained by the House committee on good government and public accountability last May.

The committee is probing the alleged misuse of P66.45 million worth of provincial tobacco funds to purchase motor vehicles.

The Ilocos earlier secured a ruling from the CA Special 4th Division ordering their provisional release.

But the House refused this.

Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez called the 3 justices who granted the petition ‘idiots.’
