Mayor Cue orders emergency coastal clean-up after huge garbage island goes viral
Currimao Mayor Gladys Cue on May 6 led an emergency coastal clean-up following viral social media posts of a large volume of plastic waste floating near the Pangil Rock Formation.
The Ilocos Norte politiko said she directed the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) to immediately address the problem upon hearing about the report.
The Pangil Rock Formation is one of the most visited attractions in Ilocos Norte.
“Pinag-uusapan pa namin ng MENRO. May lumot na, kaya naisip naming matagal nang nasa dagat yung mga basura. Dala siguro ng hangin at noong kamakailang pag-ulan. Yung iba, kumpol-kumpol. Yung iba nakalagay sa plastic bag na malalaki. Hindi natin alam kung may barkong nagtapon sa mga basurang ito,” she said.
Cue said she plans to conduct a regular clean-up drive along the municipality’s coastlines to prevent the problem from happening again.
She also called on residents to maintain cleanliness and observe proper waste disposal.
