May tinatago sa tobacco? House to subpoena Imee Marcos after snubbing hearing
The House committee on good governance and public accountability will issue a subpoena against Ilocos Norte governor Imee Marcos to compel her to attend the legislative investigation on the alleged misuse of tobacco funds.
Marcos skipped the committee’s second hearing on Tuesday (May 16) because she was reportedly on sick leave.
Other Ilocos Norte officials who failed to show up at the hearing were cited in contempt.
The committee is looking into the allegation made by Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas that Marcos diverted over P66 million in tobacco funds to buy motor vehicles.
Under Republic Act 7171, 15 percent of the cigarette excise tax should be allotted for tobacco farmers in the form of a special fund.
Incidentally, Fariñas also hails from Ilocos Norte.
