La Union mayor Garcia faces 54 years in jail over chemicals purchase
Tubao, La Union Mayor Dante Garcia has sentenced to suffer at least 54 years in prison for the overpriced purchase of chlorine and fogging chemicals in 2005 up to 2006.
The Sandiganbayan 1st Division slapped the sentence after finding him guilty with nine counts of graft.
The court pointed out that Garcia and his co-accused failed to undergo the required process of competitive bidding and several irregularities were seen even before the purchase request came in for the anti-dengue materials.
On Aug. 19, 2005, 44 liters of MAFU fogging chemicals were purchased from Arvi-Med Pharma amounting to P198,000 even though it was overpriced at P4,500 per liter since the prevailing price is only P600 per liter.
A total of 188 liters of the same fogging chemicals were purchased from M4RJ Trading from Aug. 30, 2005 to Jul. 12, 2006 but for the same overpriced amount of P4,500 per liter and totaled P846,000.
Another purchase was made on July 12, 2006 for 50 packs of DELTAMAX fogging chemical worth P162,500 from M4RJ Trading at P3,250 per pack but the amount remains overpriced since it only costs P650 per pack.
The last purchase of DELTAMAX fogging chemicals was made on on July 27, 2006 for 21 packs to P68,250.
The accused also purchased on July 19, 2006 20 gallons of chlorine amounting to P80,000 which is found overpriced since it was marked at P4,000 per liter even though the market price is only P600 per liter.
