Imee Marcos won’t attend House probe on Bongbong’s advice: Baka makulong ako!
Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos will not attend the House of Representatives’ investigation into the province’s alleged anomalous use of tobacco excise tax on the advice of her brother, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
In a press briefing Friday (June 23), Imee said she wanted to attend the hearing but was advised by Bongbong against it.
“I want to explain myself in Congress but others said I should not. Bongbong told me I could also be detained,” she said.
The House committee on good government and public accountability is looking into the province’s P66.45-million purchase of vehicles through the alleged misuse of tobacco funds.
It has detained six provincial employees due to their supposed refusal to cooperate with lawmakers investigating the issue.
Imee has been invited by the House panel several times to its hearings but she snubbed it. On two occasions, her subordinates told lawmakers she was sick.
Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel, the committee’s chair, has hinted at Imee’s possible arrest if she fails to attend the next hearing scheduled on July 25 even if a subpoena has been issued for her.
