Ilocos Norte residents spearhead campaign vs plastics

Jun 9, 2018 @ 10:29

Residents of Barangay Poblacion in Burgos town in Ilocos Norte province have lined up activities this June against plastic pollution.

Some 100 residents collected some 128 kilos of plastic bottles, plastic cups and plastic bags in a clean-up drive at the Kapurpurawan Rocks Formation on June 5.

Barangay Poblacion chairperson Joegie Jimenez said they will also hold information drives on solid waste management at the public market and schools on June 11.

Other activities include the installation of signages and the trimming of bougainvillea plants along the highway.

“It is not yet too late to save mother earth,” Jimenez said.

Meanwhile, barangay officials will have benchmarking trips to Imus and Bacoor in Cavite, and to Quezon City, to learn best practices on proper segregation, collection of waste, and operation of a material recovery facility.

Meanwhile, Barangay Poblacion said it aims to be among the best models in using garbage receptacles made of plastic bottles.

It holds continuous clean-up activities on inland bodies of water and in areas being frequented by tourists, and is planning to establish a community-based nursery, vermi-composting project and organic vegetable garden, in partnership with the Diocese of Laoag.
