Fariñas hails appointment of CJ De Castro
Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Rodolfo “Rudy” Fariñas Sr. is happy with the appointment of Teresita Leonardo-de Castro as the new Supreme Court Chief Justice.
In a statement on Sunday, August 26, the poliitko also hailed President Rodrigo Duterte for picking De Castro.
“I salute the President for upholding the tradition of seniority in the Supreme Court. More so, Chief Justice Teresita De Castro has a sterling record of service in the Judiciary,” said Fariñas.
Still, he said he is sad that people are slamming De Castro for being chosen despite being able to serve as Chief Justice for two months. She retires on October 8.
“It’s sad that a few people are denigrating such hallowed tradition by ridiculing the short tenure of CJ De Castro. The JBC (Judicial and Bar Council) gave her and Justice [Diosdado] Peralta a unanimous vote of 6 in endorsing them to the President, said Fariñas.
“I guess that if Justice [Antonio] Carpio did not decline his nomination, he would have been Chief Justice now. But he has until October 26, 2019, when CJ De Castro retires on October 8, 2019. The President might also carry on the tradition,” he added.
