Baguilat salutes Sereno, De Lima, Ressa on Women’s Day — but not Robredo
Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat Jr. saluted “brave Filipino women leaders who continue to resist the oppressive and misogynist politics in our country” on Thursday, International Women’s Day.
The Magnificent 7 lawmaker singled out four women known to have openly opposed the Duterte administration and have been subjected to its attacks: Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Senator Leila de Lima, Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, and Pinoy Ako Blogger Jover Laurio.
But Baguilat, an opposition lawmaker and officer of the Liberal Party, left out Vice President Leni Robredo, chairwoman of the LP, in his statement.
Robredo recently appeared in a TV interview in which she said she would rather “keep the peace” than be vocal in opposing President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, unlike De Lima, Sereno and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales.
“I urge you to continue to resist, dear sisters, in the fight for democracy and human rights. Continue to inspire us as we commit to support you in your struggle,” Baguilat said in his message to women.
“Today, we men celebrate WOMEN everywhere for bearing, rearing and caring for so many others while fighting for their own rights, dignity and dreams,” he said.
“But while great strides have been made to uphold their dignity, they continue to suffer injustice and discrimination at home and in society,” Baguilat said.
